One of my favorite things to be nerdy about are microphones. That being said, Matt McGlynn from Recordinghacks.com and I just finished shooting and editing the second episode of the microphone show. This time we listened to one of the most recognized microphones in the industry, the Neumann U87. Take a look at the video and let me know which one you think sounds better. Thanks to everyone who worked hard behind the scenes to make this possible.
We just wrapped up doing another live episode of California Live Mic at Loudville! Episode 4 was one of my favorites so far. With the first act, I got to do several things that as an engineer I rarely get to do. First was putting a microphone on a washboard and the second was mixing an accordion with Tri Tip Trio. The second act was an artist I have been following lately and really enjoy her music, Lauren O'Connell. To end the show Jinx Jones and the Kingtones took the stage out Loudville and got rowdy as they rocked the house with Rockabilly. That guy can shred a telecaster!
Loudville studio wrapped up 2010 with another successful and great sounding episode of California Live Mic. This was the third episode. It featured Misner & Smith, Bay City Luv, and Hero's Last Mission. There was great diversity sonically in this show and Paul and I had our hands full getting the stage ready and setting levels for these bands who were so different. Check out the video below for a brief look at some highlights.
We had another rockin' California Live Mic at Loudville.tv. What a show!! It featured the David Luning Band, Brodie Jenkins, Michael Duke and Dgiin. Watch this video to see a few highlights.
I just finished editing the picture and doing the sound mix for recordinghacks.com first Microphone Show. It was hosted by Matt McGlynn and also featured engineers Paul Simmans, Stephen Hart and myself. Playing the acoustic guitar was Chi McClean. All of it was shot in Loudville Studios. You can see it here:
Recently I finished mixing two riddim series for Itation Records. The Clearly & Ifficial riddims. Featuring artists such as Kali Blaxx, Anthony B, Lutan Fyah, Pressure, Delly Ranx to name a few. Both of them are hard hitting reggae instrumentals produced by the Tune In Crew in France. Check them out!
Yes, I've gone ahead and done it. I started a twitter account. Follow me HERE. I promise you plenty of in depth studio tweets as well as useless tweets about my dog.
Well it's been a busy past couple of months and I have been slackin' on the news updates for my site. We recently had our first episode of "California Live Mic" at Loudville.tv. We had a really good show. Thanks to an amazing staff at Loudville and excellent performers. Our first show included Anthony Bello, Mugg Muggles, Katy Stephan and El Radio Fantastique.
Each band performed 2-4 songs and it was broadcast live on the internet. Mixing the show is really an adventure and not quite like a regular studio session. Next month (November) will include the band Dgiin and several others.
Just finished mixing live set for Chi McClean with Paul Simmans. Another great live broadcast from Loudville.tv. The entire staff at Loudville did an amazing job. We spent quite a bit of time preparing for this production. With the addition of several new gizmos on the video end and the always changing audio setup it was the ultimate test in improvisation and quick thinking. If you missed the live feed we will be posting some of the show on the website later. Don't forget to sign up for updates.
T-Rex had feathers? You will have to watch National Geographic Televisions, "Dino Revolution" to find out. This was a very educational and creative script to record with Mark Keller doing the voice over at Loudville. It turns out Dinosaurs may not be what we thought they were.
Another killer session with Guy Fieri at Zone Recording today. We recorded all of Guy's phrases for the upcoming Wii game based on his hit television show, "Minute to Win It" on NBC.
On June 24th, I had the pleasure of recording Anna Deavere Smith, whom you may recognize from the television show 'Nurse Jackie'. She came into Loudville to record a voiceover for the upcoming show on the Smithsonian Channel entitled "Seizing Justice". A powerful documentary on the story of the Greensboro 4, who's non-violent sit ins at a Woolworth store helped start a revolution in the 1960's.
"Slow Down Will Ya" Music video update Posted: 06/09/10
For several weeks we have been shooting this awesome music video for Mark Keller's new song entitled "Slow Down Will Ya". With several green screens and an incredible crew this has been a great experience. Our technical director has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on the video and we hope to have the final product up for viewing soon. A special thanks to everyone involved in this production for making it so fun (Mark, Beth, Josh, Nissa, David, Jody, Jena, Sandra, Monique)!!!

Commentary of Muppets do Bohemian Rhapsody Posted: 04/20/10
I had the pleasure of recording the great Dave Goelz today at LoudVille Studios. He did the voices of Gonzo, Dr Honeydew Bunsen, Waldorf, Zoot and Beauregard. He has to be one of the funniest and most of all nicest people ever to work with. It was great to watch him go from character to character with such ease.
Today we did a live ISDN session directly with the people at CBS responsible for Undercover Boss. It was a series of voiceovers for some promotional videos of Undercover Boss.
I just recorded and mixed a song at Zone Recording with Crystal Brunnelle and her band for the town of Novato. This song will be played 24 hours a day on the streets of Novato in Marin County. Ok maybe not that but it will be featured in a tourism video about Novato and also be featured on Novato's website.
Undercover Boss ISDN session for CBS Posted: 03/24/10
According to CBS this is the episode that will submitted for an emmy. As usual Mark Keller did an amazing job reading all the voiceover script. This is episode is the one with the COO from Roto-Rooter.
Microphone Testing for recordinghacks.com Posted: 03/15/10
It's always nice to do something different in the audio and video world. Today and yesterday I had the pleasure of testing out two very cool microphones forwww.recordinghacks.com. It was the MXL Revelation and the Gemini II by Studio Electronics. I did some vocal recording at Zone Music with the band Bad Transfer and we had great results with the Gemini. Today at Loudville we tested both microphones up against the revered Telefunken 47. Check back here for full video and audio clips of how todays session went. Here is a short write up from Matthew McGlynn, http://recordinghacks.com/2010/04/16/tube-mic-voiceover-test/
"Break It Down" Narrations for National Geographic Posted: 03/09/10
I recorded a one hour episode of Break It Down today for the National Geographic channel. Mark Keller did all the voiceover. He is like an olympic athlete of voice overs. This episode was all about the breaking down of F4 Fighter jets. Break It Down Website Link
Today at Blair Hardman's studio, Zone Recording in Cotati I recorded voice over for Guy Fieri's new game show on NBC prime time called "Minute to Win It". We did 4 episodes and a bunch of publicity spots. The first episode airs on March 14, 2010. Don't miss it!
Today with Pal Simmans at Loudville Studios we did a ISDN session with Margarita Mix in Santa Monica. Mark Keller did the voice over narration for CBS's show called Undercover Boss.
Along with DJ J-Trees, I have been working on the next CD for Roots and Harmony. This one is another great mix for all the hard working farmers and supporters. It has over 40 great songs to keep you moving. Look for its release in 2011!
EXPEDITION GREAT WHITE for National Geographic Posted: 02/09/10
Another great session at Loudville Studios with Mark Keller! We did a phone patch VO session with a studio in Utah. I recorded Mark doing all the narration for the National Geographic show called, "Expedition Great White".
Today I recorded vocalist David Luning from Forestville, for the new Taco Mayo TV commercial jingle at Boomtown Studios in Sausalito. The video production team also did a live webcast stream of the entire recording and editing process with several cameras. Mark Keller has done an amazing job playing the instruments and producing the track. If you are in the midwest keep an eye out for the soon to come TV commercial.
I just finished wrapping up a recording session with Northern California band called SugarFoot. We tracked 9 songs to be featured on their new promotional release. The band is made up of Roland Tolosa(drums), Bob McBain (keyboard) from Crystal Brunelles band and also David Collins on vocals/guitar, Gus Scherer on guitar, Annie Scherer and Susan McCabe on lead vocals and Mark Chole on the bass. It was a really fun and energetic recording session, especially for a rainy sunday.
They covered bands from Michael Jackson to Duffy, all the while adding their own touches. If you see this band playing in your area, make sure you check them out!
Mixing and mastering of Crystal Brunelle's, "Tradewinds" album Posted: 12/06/09
Today I finished up the mastering of Crystal Brunelle's album called Tradewinds. This band is comprised of musicians from the local Sonoma and Marin area. Recording and editing of "Golf's Higher Plane" by Bob Fagan Posted: 12/01/09
Recording and editing for an audio book is a entirely different world than working on music projects. I love it! The book is called "Golf's Higher Plane", by Bob Fagan. It is inspired by the book "The Secret". I spent several days working with Bob and Ginnie Waters at Zone Recording, recording all the voice over. I believe the final word count was over 42,000! Then I spent several days editing the voice over to produce the final copy. It has been a very enjoyable book to work on.
I have been working on recording this band since I started in 06 at Zone Recording. They are all excellent musicians and really fun to work with. We are now in the mixing stage and having lots of fun late night sessions being creative and getting everything to rock!
Nothing gets you ready for Christmas quite like recording the Christmas special for "Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives" on the Food Network. This show was really fun to record because it was shot in Alaska. Its the first time Guy has gone to AK for the show. You can watch a brief clip of this episode on my media page.
To see me make a brief, very brief Diners and Drive Ins appearance. Watch the episode at Sol Food in San Rafael.
"Tailgate Warriors" with Guy Fieri on the Food Network Posted: 10/02/09
I just wrapped up special show to air soon on the Food Network called Tailgate Warriors with Guy Fieri. I can't say enough how great Guy is in the studio. A real pleasure to work with. His staff is great too!
Food Network "Top of Class" with Guy Fieri Posted: 09/09/09
Another killer session with Guy Fieri for an upcoming special TV Show called "Top Of Class". This was another great voice over session with Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri from Northern California.
Local Northern California band, Uptown Dread spent several days at Zone Recording recording & mixing a demo album. These guys were so much fun to work with. Their music is inspired by old school reggae artists with an authentic classic sound with spring and plate reverbs and original tape delays.
